Abstract
This study examines Süleyman Çelebi’s Vesîletü’n-Necât (d. 825/1422) within the context of the relationship between the classical scholarly tradition of kalām and Ottoman popular Islam, investigating the work’s role in the transmission of theological discourse from scholarly kalām to popular theology. The research focuses on two complementary questions: first, how the fundamental articles of faith—divine unity (ulūhiyya), prophethood (nubuwwa), and the afterlife (ākhira)—which are systematically established in classical kalām through rational argumentation, are reconstructed in Vesîletü’n-Necât by means of symbolic narratives and extraordinary motifs; and second, how this reconstruction contributed to shaping the religious mentality of Ottoman popular Islam. Using textual and comparative analysis, the study evaluates the theological themes of the work in relation to the classical Sunni kalām tradition. Particular attention is given to the representations of miracles, the Miʿrāj (Ascension), intercession (shafāʿa), the Companions, and the caliphate, comparing them with their treatment in classical theological literature. The study argues that by rearticulating theological concepts through a Sufi-inspired literary style, Vesîletü’n-Necât presents a Prophet-centered understanding of prophethood and intercession that became deeply embedded in Ottoman-Turkish popular religiosity. The study further demonstrates that Vesîletü’n-Necât, while firmly rooted in the Sunni traditions of kalām and Sufism, constructs a language of faith that resonated with the collective religious consciousness of society. During the Fetret (Interregnum), a period of political fragmentation and weakened social cohesion, the work contributed to the reconstruction of a shared religious imagination centered on the Prophet, thereby reinforcing both religious and communal identity. At the same time, its integration of theological discourse with Sufi spirituality enabled the emergence of a multilayered understanding of religion, reflecting different modes of religious expression among both scholars and the wider public.Accordingly, Vesîletü’n-Necât should be regarded not merely as a literary masterpiece but as a foundational text that articulated a Sunni worldview while shaping the ritual and devotional dimensions of Ottoman popular Islam. By examining the work through the analytical concept of “popular kalām,” this study seeks to demonstrate how the classical theological heritage was reproduced among broader segments of society and to offer a conceptual and methodological contribution to discussions on the relationship between popular Islam and scriptural Islam.
