Abstract
This article analyzes the conceptual transformation of the idea of progress in Western intellectual history and aims to examine its reflections in late Ottoman theological thought. The idea of progress emerged from the human quest for the origin, meaning, and ultimate direction of life; it has been expressed through different concepts in different periods, parallel to changes in conceptions of history and nature. Within the static and cyclical cosmological understanding of antiquity, progress was approached as a limited and qualitative development through the concept of prokope, while in the Middle Ages, the concept of profectus, expressing moral and spiritual perfection within a theological and hierarchical order, came to the fore. In the modern era, with the understanding of history and nature as a linear process of development, progress was grounded in the concept of progressus, which is based on continuous change and perfection. In the modern era, the idea of progress became an ontological and epistemological principle alongside scientific revolutions and Enlightenment philosophy. In this vein, positivist, materialist, Darwinist, and social Darwinist theories explained human history and all areas related to humans as a necessary and uninterrupted process of development towards the future. This approach, determined by an evolutionary understanding of history, was not limited to the natural sciences; it was also applied to areas such as society, culture, ethics, and religion. Within this framework, religious beliefs and traditional acceptances were reinterpreted as phenomena that emerged within historical conditions and developed over time, rather than as transcendent and immutable truths. The paradigm of progress, which gained a strong theoretical and conceptual grounding in the West, was transferred to the Ottoman intellectual world through modernization processes; particularly from the second half of the 19th century onwards, it paved the way for the formation of a new intellectual framework centered around the concepts of progress and development. The disintegration experienced in the political, military, financial, and social spheres, as well as the influence of modern science and philosophy, compelled Ottoman intellectuals to confront the Western understanding of progress. This confrontation necessitated a re-evaluation of classical kalām's understanding of knowledge, existence, and history, and the relationship between religious thought and modern scientific discourse became a topic of debate. This article examines how this understanding of progress was met and transformed in late Ottoman kalam thought using a historical and comparative method. Within this framework, the positions and views of Musa Kâzım Efendi (d. 1920), Filibeli Ahmed Hilmi (d. 1914), İzmirli İsmail Hakkı (d. 1946), Elmalılı Muhammed Hamdi (d. 1942), Ömer Nasûhî Bilmen (d. 1971), and Aksekili Ahmet Hamdi (d. 1951), who largely represent the prevailing intellectual outlook of their time, are examined comparatively in fundamental theological debates such as creation, the first human, the emergence of religions, and historical development. The study aims to reveal the critical and conciliatory attitudes these thinkers developed in response to Western ideas of progress and evolution; to show how they sought to strike a balance with modern thought while preserving the fundamental tenets of the Islamic tradition. In this respect, the article aims to contribute to understanding the transformation of Ottoman theological thought in the face of modernity.
