Abstract

Although aging is a natural process, the changes that occur during this process can impact an individual’s sexual health, even though sexuality is often overlooked. In order to meet the care needs of the increasing older adults’ population today, sexuality should be evaluated. This review aims to draw attention to the old age period and sexual health in this period. It is essential to know the effects of old age on sexual health to meet older adults’ health needs. Physiological changes in the body in old age (menopause, andropause), chronic diseases (cardiovascular diseases, chronic lung disease, musculoskeletal system diseases, diabetes, hypertension, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias), medical treatments and psychosocial factors (anxiety) disorders, affective disorders, sleep disorders, elder abuse, violence) negatively affect the sexuality of individuals, causing not the loss of sexuality but a decrease in sexual performance. Beliefs of society and culture also affect sexual health in old age. The thought that sexuality ends in old age or that it should come to an end negatively affects the elderly to receive health services for sexual health. By providing correct sexual information to both young and old by nurses, it will be possible to change the false belief in society that there is no sexual life in old age, to increase awareness, to develop a positive attitude, and thus, it will be possible for elderly individuals to have adequate access to health services.Nurses should identify the risky behaviors of the elderly regarding sexuality, meet their care needs and increase research on the subject.
