Abstract

Objective: This randomized controlled study conducted with older women aimed to determine the effects of the Active Living Program on healthy lifestyle behaviors and life satisfaction. Materials and Methods: The study was completed with 94 older women. Pre-test and post-test data were collected using a personal information form, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, and the Life Satisfaction Scale for the Elderly. After the pre-test, the Active Living Program, developed based on the Health Promotion Model of Nola J. Pender, was implemented for the women in the intervention group. The program included health promotion education and bocce activities conducted over 6 weeks. In the statistical analysis, independent samples t-test, paired samples t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, Wilcoxon test, Pearson chi-square test, and Yates correction were used. Results: In the intervention group, within-group comparisons showed that the mean total score of the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II increased significantly from 126.79±26.65 to 158.83±18.5, and the mean total score of the Life Satisfaction Scale for the Elderly increased from 43.96±12.90 to 59.60±6.35 after the intervention. In addition, post-intervention between-group comparisons revealed that the scores of all subdimensions of both scales were higher in the intervention group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Model-based nursing programs were found to be effective in improving healthy lifestyle behaviors and life satisfaction among older women. It is recommended that further studies including planned educational interventions based on theoretical models be conducted to promote the health of older individuals.
