Abstract

Objective: Hepatosteatosis is defined as liver fat content exceeding 5 percent of liver mass or fat vacuoles seen in more than 5 percent of hepatocytes at pathologic studies. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalance and degree of non-alcoholic hepatosteatosis in type II Diabetic patients and to identify the causes. Study design: Prospecive study Materials & Medhods: Fifty-three type II diabetics were enrolled in this study. Thirty-seven were female and six- teen were male with the age range from 31 to 89. Classification was made according to ultrasound findings: first, second and third degree steatosis. Results: In 77 percent of patients hepatosteatosis was detected, 48.8 percent of these (20 patient) was first degree while 51.2 percent of these (21 patient) was second degree. In 23 per cent of patients had no sign of steatosis. Body mass index was found 30.5±2.9 kg/m2 in non-steatotic patients, 28.7±3.2 kg/m2 in first degree steatotic patients and 32.7±4.97 kg/m2 in second degree steatotic patients. There was a positive correlation between steatosis and body mass index (p=0.008). When we compared non- steatotic patients and first degree steatotic patients with second degree steatotic patients, C-peptid level was deter- mined to be significantly difference between them (p=0.015). There was no relation between hepatosteatosis and the duration of diabetes and HbA1c levels (p= 0.48; p=0.54; respectively) Conclusion: The most important factor related to hepatosteatosis in type II diabetic patients is BMI. It seems that obesity is determinating factor in hepatosteatosis. Moreover diabetics with hepatostetosis have also hyperinsülinemia.

Bulgular: Yüzde 77 olguda yağlanma tespit edildi ve bunların %48.8'i (20 olgu) I. derece yağlanma, %51.2'i (21 olgu) II derece yağlanma idi. Yüzde 23 olguda yağlanma saptanmadı. Hepatosteatoz saptanmayan olguların ortalama vücut kitle indeksleri (VKİ) 30.5±2.9 kg/m² iken I.derece hepatosteatozu olanların ortalama VKİ 28.7±3.2kg/m² II. derece hepatosteatozu olanların ortalama VKİ 32.7±4.97 kg/m² bulundu.
