Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated the results of endoscopic band ligation performed in our endoscopy center within a five-year period in patients with esophageal varices. Patients and Methods: Out of 158 patients with esophageal varices and cirrhosis, 67 patients (40 males, 27 females; mean age 51 years; range 15 to 80 years) underwent endoscopic band ligation. Esophageal varices were graded from 1 to 4 according to their size. Patients were assessed with regard to the number of ligation bands and the effectiveness of ligation. Results: Of 158 patients with esophageal varices, 20 patients (12.7%) had grade l, 37 patients (23.4%) had grade II, 61 patients (38.6%) had grade III, and 40 patients (25.3%) had grade IV varices. The mean number of bands used for varices was 3.2 (range 1 to 6 bands). Bleeding was controlled with endoscopic band ligation in ali the patients. No ligation-related complications were encountered. Conclusion: Endoscopic band ligation is effective and safe in controlling and prevention of active esophageal variceal bleeding.

Özet

Amaç: Endoskopi ünitemizde beş yıllık süreçte belirlenen özofagus varislerine endoskopik band ligasyonu (EBL) uygulanan olgular değerlendirildi. Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Endoskopi ünitesinde özofagus varisi saptanan sirozlu 158 hastanın 67'sine (40 erkek, 27 kadın; ört. yaş 51; dağılım 15-80) EBL uygulandı. Endoskopik incelemede belirlenen varisler birden dörde kadar derecelendirildi. Hastalar uygulanan bant sayısı ve uygulamanın etkinliği açısından değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Özofagus varisi saptanan olguların 20'sinde (%12.7) birinci derece, 37'sinde (%23.4) ikinci derece, 61'inde (%38.6) üçüncü derece, 40'ında (%25.3) dördüncü derece varis belirlendi. Her hastaya ortalama 3.2 adet band ligasyonu (dağılım 1-6 adet) uygulandı.
