Abstract
This article examines Erol Güngör’s understanding of national identity construction within the framework of the ethno-symbolist approach. In the literature on nationalism, primordialism and modernist approaches have advanced different arguments about the historical origins of nations, cultural continuity, and the construction of national identities. In this context, the ethno-symbolist approach developed by Anthony D. Smith, while accepting the argument that nations acquire political form in the modern era, defines nations as formations rooted in historical ethnic communities, myths, symbols, and cultural elements. Güngör’s emphasis, at the general level, on national culture, history, language, and the construction of national identity as a whole, and, more specifically, his explanation of the continuity of the nation on a cultural rather than a biological basis, makes it possible to interpret his thought through the lens of ethno-symbolism. Within this framework, the article examines, from the perspective of ethno-symbolism, Güngör’s emphasis on the Ottoman Empire and Islam as the historical foundations of the national identity, in contrast to the ethno-secular identity established during the early Republican period. This article aims to position Güngör’s understanding of nationalism as an indigenous ethno-symbolist perspective in the history of Turkish political thought and to discuss his contribution to the theoretical foundations of modern Turkish nationalism within this framework.
