Abstract

This article examines how the myth of meritocracy, the primary legitimizing tool of modern capitalism, functions as an agnotological (manufactured ignorance) apparatus that obscures structural inequalities and secures mass compliance with the system. The objective of the study is to expose the class-based exploitation hidden behind this ideological narrative, which largely individualizes success and failure. Methodologically blending a critical literature review with conceptual analysis, this qualitative research substantiates its theoretical framework –built at the intersection of sociology, political philosophy, and game theory– with contemporary macro-statistics such as reports from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), Oxfam, and PISA. The primary findings demonstrate that power sustains itself not merely by producing knowledge, but by strategically engineering ignorance through institutional blindness, ignorance alibis that absolve elite privilege, and illusions of personal failure created by examination systems. Furthermore, the “crony capitalism” practices of core capitalist countries and peripheral/semi-peripheral countries like Türkiye are briefly contextualized at a theoretical level rather than through an empirical comparison. Ultimately, the study concludes that the meritocratic narrative is not an objective metric of justice but a camouflage strategy that individualizes poverty and conceals massive capital transfers. The article advocates for overcoming this agnotological domination by reconceptualizing poverty on a rights-based, political foundation rather than through the lens of charity.
