Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide an overall overview of the career plateau literature by conducting a bibliometric analysis of existing research in the field. For this purpose, the bibliometric characteristics and scientific structure of publications retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database were analyzed. Based on a sample of 122 studies, the publication growth trend and performance were examined, and co-authorship analysis, citation analysis, keyword analysis, bibliographic coupling analysis, and co-citation analysis were conducted; and the most productive and influential authors, organizations, sources, and countries, as well as the prominent research themes, were identified. VOSviewer software was employed for conducting and visualizing the bibliometric analyses. According to the Web of Science categories, research on career plateau is predominantly concentrated in the fields of Management, Applied Psychology, and Business. The findings indicate that the career plateau literature has experienced significant growth in recent years. Tremblay, M., the United States, and the Journal of Vocational Behavior were identified as the leading author, country, and publication source in the field, respectively. Career plateau research was found to concentrate on various organizational behavior topics, particularly hierarchical and job content plateaus, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, turnover intention, and employee well-being. Overall, this research is expected to contribute to the field by systematically mapping the career plateau concept, making research gaps more visible, and providing data-driven insights for both scholars and practitioners.
