Abstract

The green and digital transitions do not automatically produce inclusive growth. They interact through distinct labour-market processes: green structural change reallocates employment across sectors and places, whereas artificial intelligence (AI) reorganises tasks and authority within workplaces. This article develops a process-based conceptual framework for examining when their interaction can support AI-enabled green growth. An integrative review brings together peer-reviewed research and recent comparative reports. The framework follows a directional sequence in which green restructuring and AI deployment generate sectoral reallocation and task/workplace reorganisation. Labour-market adjustment arrangements and structural context then shape how these mechanisms lead to environmental, productivity, employment, job-quality, and distributive outcomes. These elements are not specified as independent, dependent, mediator, or moderator variables because the article does not estimate a statistical model. The framework distinguishes an enabling pathway based on labour augmentation and shared productivity gains from an adverse pathway involving displacement, surveillance, unequal value capture, and ecological externalisation. Six propositions identify relationships for subsequent empirical examination. A renewable-electricity value-chain application illustrates why AI exposure and labour effects differ across manufacturing, construction, and operations. The contribution is a power-sensitive account that treats environmental improvement and decent work as joint and institutionally contingent outcomes. Keywords: twin transition, artificial intelligence, labour-market adaptation, just transition, green growth.
