Abstract

This study aims to examine the prevalent discourses of extreme busyness and burnout in late capitalist societies as a performative status symbol willingly constructed by individuals. Within this framework, busyness represents the attempt of the dispossessed modern individual to warm themselves by throwing their only remaining “property” –their own time– into the fire with their own hands. The modern subject is preoccupied with erecting a monument of prestige from the ashes of the very conflagration that consumes them. Grounded in a philosophical and sociological conceptual synthesis, the article discusses the transformation of time poverty into a modern badge of honor. The primary findings demonstrate that the aestheticization of busyness is a privilege exclusive to the cognitive labor class, creating a sharp class asymmetry against the invisible, compulsory toil of the lower classes. Additionally, it is identified that the existential void generated by increasingly meaningless professional practices is masked by a state of perpetual rushing; where the colonization of leisure functions as a tragic narcosis distancing individuals from their own truth. Ultimately, the article posits that emancipation from this performance cycle lies not in mere inaction, but in rejecting artificial ostentation and returning to an authentic mode of action and existence that befits human nature.
