Abstract
This article examines how the concept of “boredom” (Langeweile) has been transformed into an instrument of ontological and biopolitical domination within the digital speed culture constructed by late capitalism. The primary objective of the study is to discuss how dopamine capitalism, by imprisoning the individual within a continuous cycle of stimulation, abolishes the “boredom” that provides space for reflection, remembrance, and authentic identity construction. Structured through a theoretical-conceptual analysis method rooted in the tradition of critical theory, this study utilizes Walter Benjamin’s perception of time in arcades and Byung-Chul Han’s concept of hyper-attention as its primary theoretical framework. The research concludes that algorithmic architecture labels and executes boredom as an “inefficiency”, creating a structural “digital amnesia” that prevents individuals from confronting their own past. In this context, the “right to boredom” is conceptualized not merely as a search for psychological relief in the digital age, but as a strategy of radical autonomy and micro-resistance essential for preserving individual and collective memory. Within this framework, the article proposes that the passive cyber-subject, subjugated by the dictatorship of speed, can redraw their cognitive boundaries through practices of contemplation and conscious pausing, thus offering a rereading of “idle time” as a possibility for political emancipation.
