Abstract
Literary journalism, which lies at the intersection of literature and journalism, is the reporting of newsworthy social phenomena by utilizing literary narrative techniques. The only feature that distinguishes this type of writing from traditional journalism is not the preference for a literary narrative language, but the fact that the writer/reporter personally experiences the situation by taking part in the events. In works of literary journalism, the power of personal testimony is combined with literary expression and a social reality is conveyed directly through the eyes of those who experience it. This study focuses on Jack London's The People of the Abyss as an example of literary journalism and reveals how urban poverty is presented in this text through a qualitative perspective. The People of the Abyss is a work of literary journalism written by London in 1902 based on his observations in the East End of London. Disguised as a sailor with no job, no money and no place to stay, London spent seven weeks exploring life on the outskirts of London, closely witnessing the hunger and misery of the working class. London's personal observations, the human stories he listened to and the information he obtained from official documents reveal that deep poverty reigned in London's East End. London describes life on the East Side with the metaphor of the Abyss, likening poverty here to an irreversible fall. Arguing that no human being should live in such conditions, London blames the mismanagement for this poverty. Although The People of the Abyss was written in 1902, the urban poverty and related problems that the work draws attention to continue to be seen today. This study believes that literary journalism is an effective literary genre in revealing social reality and that it is useful in approaching systemic problems such as urban poverty from a more humane perspective.
