Abstract
With the founding of the Republic, culture became one of the fundamental tools for the construction of social identity and modernisation within the new political system. Culture-focused policies were implemented across a broad spectrum extending from education, the arts and sport to everyday life. It is evident that these policies aimed to shape and restructure not only civil life but also the functioning of the public sphere. Thus, culture has played a role in shaping the ‘contemporary’, ‘rational’, ‘healthy’ and ‘disciplined’ citizen by transmitting the ideology of the Republic to society through a dual function. In this process, parallel implementations in provincial towns alongside central administration have determined the nature of centre-periphery relations. This article aims to examine the multi-layered structure of these relationships using the example of Gaziantep. This article examines the case of Gaziantep a city that stood out during the Republican era in terms of the policies implemented covering the period from 1923 to 1950. The selection of Gaziantep as a case study was influenced by the city’s historical legacy, strong local identity and social dynamism. These factors ensured that the city constituted a distinct microcosm in terms of the concrete outcomes of the relevant policies. Within this framework, the article examines cultural activities in Gaziantep through the prism of educational institutions, Turkish Cultural Associations (Türk Ocakları), People’s Houses (Halkevleri), museum and library activities, performing arts, cinema activities, sports initiatives, and associations and voluntary organisations. The article concludes that Gaziantep, whilst remaining in harmony with central government policies, has undergone a unique process of cultural change and modernisation; it is dynamic in terms of its centre-periphery relations and serves as a concrete example at the local level within the history of Turkish provincial culture.
Özet
Kültür, Cumhuriyet’in kuruluşuyla birlikte yeni siyasal sistem içerisinde toplumsal kimlik inşasının ve modernleşmenin temel araçlarından biri olmuştur.
