Abstract

The fundamental aim of this study is to evaluate the research productivity of family tourism research as measured by the academic publication volume and to evaluate the academic impact of contributing researchers, countries, institutions, journals. In line with this objective, a bibliometric analysis of 5,639 family tourism publications (2000–2024) from Web of Science was performed using VOSviewer to analyze the scientific literature. The findings obtained reveal that there is a steady increase in the number of annual publications and, accordingly, an increase in the number of citations. This situation reflects the increasing academic interest and acceptance of family tourism as an interdisciplinary, developing field. The study revealed that the United States and the People's Republic of China are the most productive countries in family tourism research; Osman M. Karatepe is the most active contributing author, with 53 publications and a total of 3,120 citations; authors from the People's Republic of China account for the highest number of publications and international co-authored works; and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the most influential institution. An analysis of the bibliometric profiles of the top ten most productive authors in the field of family tourism showed no gender-based distribution among the researchers, indicating that productivity levels are independent of the gender variable. This study presents a holistic perspective based on bibliometric analyses of family tourism research. Bibliometric analysis contributes to the development process of related fields by scanning the bibliometric literature of family tourism research, revealing new research themes, further research trends.
