Abstract
One of the areas where the Ottoman Empire reformed during its modernization process was education. The innovation movement in education, which started in the military field in the 18th century; in the 19th century, during the reign of Mahmud II, it also spread to the field of civil education and many new schools were opened until the collapse of the empire. In addition to these schools, which are simply called "mekteb"; especially in the last periods of the empire, the nature of education, how it should be done, and the condition of schools became the subject of debate among Ottoman intellectuals and statesmen. Because in a period when the classical Ottoman educational institutions, madrasas and modern schools were opened, education appeared to have a two-headed appearance. Especially after the declaration of the Second Constitutional Monarchy, education and education-related issues began to be more seriously discussed. At this point, madrasas, a traditional Islamic and Ottoman educational institution, also began to be discussed. At this point; while some advocated the reformation of madrasas that had lost their former power and success, some who opposed this claimed that madrasas should be closed because they had no longer functioned. One of those who advocate the closure of madrasas is Hemedanizade Ali Naci. He published his views on this subject in a small book called "Softas and Madrasas". Shortly after this book was published, responses defending the madrasas were written to him in the journals "El-medâris" and “Medrese İ‘tikâdları”. In this study, the views of Hemedanizade and those who responded to him will be evaluated and the aforementioned works will be transcribed.
