Abstract

Gaziantep is situated within the zone of influence of the East Anatolian Fault Zone and the Dead Sea Fault System, and has been subjected to numerous destructive earthquakes throughout history. This study examines the earthquake experience of Gaziantep by analyzing the seismic events that affected the city within a historical context. The research utilizes historical earthquake catalogs, Ottoman archival documents, contemporary memoirs, and eyewitness reports. In particular, the impacts of the 1114 Maraş Earthquake and the 1822 Aleppo-Antioch Earthquake on Gaziantep are evaluated in detail; furthermore, the similarities in the destructive nature and societal reflexes of the earthquakes that occurred during the Republican period and the February 6, 2023 Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes are revealed. In this regard, the research finds that earthquakes occurring in different periods produced remarkably similar consequences. Due to these earthquakes, a vast number of people lost their lives, residential buildings, places of worship, and public structures were severely damaged, and major historical landmarks such as the Gaziantep Castle suffered significant degradation. In the aftermath of the disasters, it is observed that a major portion of the population was forced to live in tents, migration movements took place, economic life was adversely affected, and epidemic diseases emerged. Historical sources also indicate that earthquakes were often perceived by the societies of the period as divine warnings or the consequences of social degradation. In this respect, beyond outlining the seismic history of Gaziantep, this study evaluates the socioeconomic impacts of natural disasters on urban structures.

Özet

Gaziantep, Doğu Anadolu Fay Hattı ile Ölü Deniz Fay Sistemi’nin etkilediği bölgeler arasında yer almakta olup tarih boyunca birçok yıkıcı depreme maruz kalmıştır. Bu çalışmada, Gaziantep’i etkileyen depremler tarihî süreç içerisinde ele alınarak şehrin deprem tecrübesi incelenmiştir.
