Abstract

This study examines digital news website interfaces through the perspective of choice architecture. The aim is to comparatively analyze how news interfaces structure user attention, visibility relations, and news consumption experiences. The research is designed as a qualitative visual-content analysis and focuses on five news platforms: BBC Türkçe, TRT Haber, T24, BirGün, and CNN Türk. The analysis is based on thirteen criteria representing content organization, attention economy, advertising intervention, and readability dimensions. Each platform was evaluated using a standardized scoring framework, and the findings were supported by heat maps and category-based visualizations. The results indicate that news platforms cannot be positioned on a single linear scale; instead, they produce distinct user experience regimes. BBC Türkçe and TRT Haber stand out with more controlled content organization and higher readability, while T24 presents a hybrid and text-oriented structure. BirGün and particularly CNN Türk display interface arrangements characterized by higher visual intensity, stronger advertising intervention, and more fragmented attention flows. Overall, the findings suggest that digital news interfaces should not be regarded as neutral surfaces for content delivery. Rather, they function as choice architectures that simultaneously organize visibility, attention, and commercial relations, thereby shaping how users encounter and experience news content.
