Abstract
Disaster journalism holds a critical position within journalism due to its social responsibility and its function of accurately informing the public. In this context, earthquake journalism is particularly important. Expert opinions are among the most crucial sources of information for earthquake news. While seismologists' views play a central role in journalism's informational function, inconsistencies among these opinions undermine the public's need for accurate, reliable information. Conflicting statements from earth scientists in the media following the April 23, 2025, Istanbul earthquake sparked serious public debate, once again bringing the phenomenon of sensational journalism to the forefront. This study examines whether expert opinions during disaster periods serve the purpose of public information or contribute to sensational journalism within the context of journalistic professional ethics. Designed as a qualitative case study, this research analyses the media commentary of 10 seismologists who appeared most frequently, using thematic and hermeneutic analysis. The findings reveal that experts developed positive, negative, and neutral future projections based not only on scientific data but also on personal predictions and past references. It was determined that some experts adopted a tabloid-style discourse, straying from scientific objectivity, both on their social media accounts and in traditional media outlets, creating controversy through personal attacks on colleagues. The study demonstrates that the relationship between media and experts regarding the management of scientific uncertainty and responsible science communication in disaster journalism needs to be reorganised within an ethical framework.
