Abstract
In the light of Stuart Hall’s representation theory, this study aims to examine the articles penned by journalist Hikmet Feridun Es in Akşam newspaper between 1930 and 1934 within the context of Istanbul women and female representations. The period under review is recognized not only as the years during which the Republican ideology was intensely constructed, but also as an era when the well-educated cadres of society undertook the task of disseminating this state ideology. Undoubtedly, women's rights rank among the most crucial reforms of this period. Following the proclamation of the Republic, consecutive reforms granted women political, social, and economic rights; however, these rights were actualized within the boundaries defined by male-dominated authority. Grounded in the intentional and constructivist approaches of Hall's representation theory, this study analyzes how a patriarchal perspective was reproduced through the media of the era, focusing specifically on Es’s column "Bir Çırpıda." His observations are structured around key themes such as modernization, women's presence in the public sphere, shifting cultural perceptions, and fashion. The analysis reveals that while the meaning disseminated by the official ideology was humorously reconstructed through language by a popular journalist, the author experienced a deep dilemma. Despite supporting the profile of the educated and working woman, Es frequently wavered between women's new roles and their traditional roles from the past, harboring significant anxieties regarding the disruption of traditional female roles.
