Abstract

This study aims to examine the effects of algorithmic management on labor processes within the context of the rapidly expanding platform economy and the "sole trader" (esnaf kurye) courier model in Turkey, through the couriers' own narratives. A netnographic method, one of the qualitative research designs, was adopted for the research; six highly interactive YouTube videos, where couriers discuss their working conditions, income models, and platform policies, were identified as data sources. A total of 100 courier narratives were analyzed through thematic analysis along the axes of economic risk, bodily discipline, and psychological domination. Analysis findings indicate that the platforms' promise of "being one's own boss" transforms into a structural illusion of autonomy in the field. The findings reveal the construction of an economic dependence model where risk is systematically transferred to the worker, a bodily discipline regime operating with the logic of digital Taylorism, and a "digital panopticon" structure where surveillance is socialized. In conclusion, the study argues that algorithmic management is not merely a technical management tool, but a multi-layered mechanism of domination that encircles the economic, bodily, and existential boundaries of labor.
