Abstract
The sense of smell, which has been attributed an aesthetic value throughout human history, has evolved into a critical strategic component within the contemporary marketing ecosystem, primarily shaped by consumers' need for smell. The primary objective of this research is to investigate the impact of the need for smell on unplanned buying behavior, specifically concerning cosmetic products. Utilizing a convenience sampling method, data were collected via an online questionnaire from 384 participants aged 18 and older across Turkey. The collected data were subjected to descriptive statistics, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), and simple linear regression analyses using the SPSS 25.0 software package. The results revealed that consumers' overall need for smell has a positive and statistically significant impact on unplanned buying behavior. Further analyses concerning the sub-dimensions of the need for smell indicated that while the dimensions of hedonic consumption, personal preferences, and memories significantly influence unplanned buying behavior, the buying preferences dimension does not exert a determinative effect. This finding implies that the act of smelling functions primarily as an emotional and experiential trigger rather than a rational decision-making criterion. Ultimately, the research findings theoretically and practically underscore the importance of integrating individuals' sensory pursuits and olfactory motivations into sensory marketing strategies.
