Abstract

This study was prepared based on the idea that defining the ideal employee profile for field sales teams solely through standard individual competencies does not fully reflect the reality in the field. While communication skills, persuasion ability, motivation, and planning are among the many elements highlighted in the field sales literature, how these competencies gain meaning under different regional conditions is often not sufficiently addressed. However, field applications show that the behaviors and priorities expected of sales representatives can vary significantly depending on the conditions of the region. Based on this point, the study addresses the ideal field sales employee profile not only through the question of “which competencies are required?” but also through the question of how these competencies are prioritized in different regional field realities. The research process was designed as a three-stage field study; the first two stages identified regionally specific perceptions, while the third stage re-evaluated these perceptions within a common competency framework using the Fuzzy TOPSIS method. This structure allowed for the simultaneous examination of regional differences and commonalities in the field sales role. It can be said that the study provides a holistic perspective, centered on the geographical and cultural context, to the concept of the ideal field sales employee, which is mostly defined in literature based on individual competencies. The study’s findings highlight that field sales performance exhibits a multi-layered structure and that individual characteristics only translate into sustainable success when aligned with regional conditions.
