Abstract
This study aims to analyze the mythopoetic dialectic between desire and destruction in Saltburn (2023), directed by Emerald Fennell, based on the structuralist semiotic theory of Algirdas Julien Greimas. Drawing on Greimas’s approach that meaning is produced not within isolated signs but through a relational network among signs, this study proposes reading the narrative not through surfacelevel character representations but through deep structural functions. In this respect, the actantial model and the semiotic square are positioned as analytical tools that render visible how regimes of desire in the film are constructed and deconstructed. The study approaches Saltburn as a modern myth and reconsiders the two central figures of the narrative as opposing actants along a mythopoetic axis of Lucifer and Dionysus. The character of Felix represents a Luciferian rupture through his association with excess, deviation, and downfall, while Oliver reveals the possibility of a Dionysian flow through excess, pleasure, and transformative potential. This opposition functions not only as a tension between characters but also as a structural line of rupture that exposes the immanent contradiction of desire itself. In this context, Saltburn makes visible the cyclical nature of desire and destruction, which do not exclude but continuously reproduce one another. Consequently, the study discusses, from a semiotic perspective, how the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of subject formation in modern cinema are constructed and deconstructed through mythopoetic images.
