Abstract
A look at the history of cinema reveals that the portrayal of love in films parallels the conventions of classical narrative cinema. This study highlights the originality of Leos Carax’s approach, as he occasionally steps outside the bounds of classical narrative to explore the pathological aspects of love. In this context, the film opens up anamorphic spaces for the viewer to explore. This study aims to examine Leos Carax’s film The Lovers on the Bridge (Les amants du Pont-Neuf, 1991) a work significantly influenced by the French New Wave within the framework of C. G. Jung’s analytical psychology theory and the concept of the liminal space. In line with this objective, the Pont-Neuf bridge, while serving as a physicallocation connecting two sides, is also viewed as a threshold symbolizing the experiences of characters who exist outside of social life during their psychological transformation processes. Within the conceptual framework of this study, the symbolic relationship between Jung’s collective unconscious, persona, shadow, and anima-animus archetypes and space is examined. The study also draws on the concept of anamorphosis from Slavoj Žižek’s book Looking Awry to broaden the perspective on characters and events, offering an anamorphic viewpoint. In this vein, the characters and the concept of space in the film are depicted in an unconventional manner, subjecting them to deconstruction. Through the selected scenes in the film, similarities are observed between the characters’ psyches and the reconstruction of space. In this context, the film The Lovers on the Bridge has made visible the exploration of the characters’ psychological transformations on a Jungian plane. In conclusion, an allegory of love has been constructed using Jung’s archetypes, and the characters in the film have been discussed within the context of liminal space.
