Abstract
Turkish music comes from the cultural codes of Turkish society. This music, also referred to as alaturka, reflects the aesthetic taste of our nation. This music gains a new dimension in Anatolia and creates its own synthesis. Our classical literature feeds alaturka music and enriches it. With the Tulip Period, the song genre gains importance and lyrics are written in this form. Alaturka music is respected in the palace and composers are supported. With the reform movement that started in the Tanzimat period, there are changes in the understanding of taste and entertainment. The most prominent of these changes is seen in music. In the mansions, the piano becomes the most respected instrument. Children of elite families acquire piano training. Interest in Western music gradually increases. With the establishment of Darülbedayi and Darülelhan in Istanbul, musical studies gain a new dimension. In time, the palace also adopts an attitude favouring Western music. With the proclamation of the Republic, Atatürk initiated a reform movement in Turkish music. He organized scientific meetings for this purpose. At official meetings, he makes statements in favour of Western music. In private conversations, he prefers alaturka music. During this period, efforts to make Turkish music ‘polyphonic’ also gained momentum. After Atatürk's death, music-related efforts do not reach the desired level. After the Second World War, ‘commercial music’ develops and continues for a long time. The difference between the perspectives of traditionalists and reformers in alaturka music continues to this day. In this study, the process of change after Tanzimat and the reform of Turkish music in the Republican period were attempted to be discussed.
