Abstract

Abstract This study examines the meaning crisis of the modern individual through an interdisciplinary approach, aiming to integrate literature—as an informal educational material—into formal religious education pedagogy. The primary materials of the research are two contrasting philosophical paradigms written in the historical atmosphere of the 1930s: Jean-Paul Sartre’s Nausea (1938) and Samiha Ayverdi’s Batmayan Gün (1939). The research employs "macrocomparative" and "typological" comparative literature analysis from qualitative designs, noting the use of the Turkish translation of Nausea instead of its original language as a methodological limitation. According to the textual analysis, Sartre's concept of nausea, often regarded in literary readings merely as a tragic "result" of meaninglessness, is fundamentally a necessary "starting point" (awakening) where the modern individual sheds dogmas to construct subjective meaning and freedom. Conversely, against the suffocating isolation brought by this secular freedom, Ayverdi’s work offers a Sufi "communitarian spiritual framework" and the guidance of a spiritual mentor (mürşit), where the individual submits to divine unity. In conclusion, the study posits that an effective modern religious education must develop a dialectical and inclusive pedagogy; it should validate the existential questioning and demand for freedom highlighted by Sartre (the starting point), while simultaneously providing the communitarian belonging and spiritual guidance exemplified by Ayverdi. Keywords: Comparative Literature, Existentialism, Jean-Paul Sartre, Religious Education, Samiha Ayverdi, Search for Meaning, Sufism.
