Abstract

Bathing stands out as one of the most prevalent visual themes in Western art. Artists in Western art have visualized bathing scenes in various contexts. Tracing the origins of the bathing theme, it is evident that mythological stories and religious texts have served as its source. Mythological bathing scenes incorporate narratives from Greek and Roman mythology, while religious bathing scenes have largely developed within Christian iconography. In Western art, bathing scenes represent not only an act of bodily cleansing but also a symbolic expression of the relationship between humanity and the sacred, nature, and its own existence. Shaped through mythological and religious narratives, this theme has survived to the present day as an important subject in art history, reflecting the aesthetic understandings and cultural values of different periods. This study aims to identify the mythological and religious contexts of bathing by selecting examples related to the mythological and religious theme of bathing in Western art from Antiquity to the Baroque period.
