Abstract

The image of the book in European painting has carried various meanings as a symbol of knowledge, belief, authority, and individual thought in different periods; it has been a mirror of cultural and artistic transformations. Books generally possess symbolic weight in works of art and reflect the intellectual, religious, and social values of the time. Images that replace written words in painting are narrative components that researchers always need to explain. The books depicted in painting have also been significant visual images reflecting the intellectual and spiritual values of the time. The way these images are used has varied according to the social, religious, and cultural context of the period. The image of the book in European painting has generally been used as a symbolic representation of themes such as knowledge, wisdom, religion, power, and authority. Contemporary artists have included books as objects in their works to convey deeper meanings and narratives of these themes. In this article, the areas of use, iconography, and forms of usage of the image of the book in European painting from the Middle Ages to the present have been addressed through examples, and books have also been examined in the context of the use of objects in art.
