Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to design communication cards for children transported by ambulance and to evaluate the significance of these cards from the perspective of pre-hospital healthcare professionals. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study included 162 paramedics working in public and private ambulance stations across Türkiye. Participants were selected using the snowball sampling method. Data were collected online through the “Communication Cards Evaluation Questionnaire,” developed by the researchers. The questionnaire consisted of 21 items, and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was found to be 0.87. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS 26.0 software. Results: Among participants, 44.7% reported frequently encountering pediatric patients, and 36.8% stated that communicating with children was a source of stress. While 53.3% of participants found the cards insufficiently understandable for children, 48.7% did not consider them impractical. Conclusion: Findings indicate that the current communication cards are inadequate for establishing effective communication with pediatric patients. However, if redesigned to be more user-friendly and developmentally appropriate, these cards could support communication processes in pre-hospital emergency care. The study highlights the potential of visual communication tools in enhancing pediatric interaction and underscores the need for further research to improve their design and applicability.
