Abstract
This article examines the application of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology in the automatic recognition of The Genealogy of the Turks. The research object is the printed edition of the work of Abu al-Ghazi Bahadur Khan, written in the Chagatai literary tradition. The conversion of the original PDF document into a Microsoft Word format was carried out by software engineers at Astana IT University. During this process, the electronic version of the work preserved in the National Corpus of the Kazakh Language at the Akhmet Baitursynuly Institute of Linguistics served as the reference text. The OCR-generated text was subsequently verified by the authors through a detailed comparison with the original PDF version. Recognition errors were corrected, and the accuracy of graphic features and diacritical marks was evaluated. The study employed comparative-historical, descriptive, and textological methods. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of automatically recognizing the printed text of the aforementioned work using OCR technology, to determine the extent to which the recognized output differs from the original text. Additionally, the study aims to identify potential applications of this technology in humanities research. The results further indicate that initial OCR output can be substantially improved through model retraining combined with philological verification. For the printed text examined in this study, accuracy of text recognition increased from 69.51% to 94.62% following OCR model refinement. These findings confirm that OCR technology significantly facilitates digitization, organization of textual data, offers considerable potential for applications in humanities research. This technology significantly facilitates digitization and the organization of textual data.
Özet
Bu makalede, OCR (Optik Karakter Tanıma) teknolojisinin “Şecere-i Türk” eserinin otomatik metin tanıma sürecindeki uygulanabilirliği, uygulama özellikleri ve elde edilen sonuçlar incelenmektedir. Araştırmanın inceleme nesnesini, Çağatay Türkçesi dönemine ait Ebülgazi Bahadır Han’ın “Şecere-i Türk” eseri oluşturmaktadır. PDF formatındaki özgün metnin Word belgesine dönüştürülmesi Astana IT University bilgisayar mühendisleri tarafından gerçekleştirilmiştir.
