Abstract

This article presents a comparative and typological study of genealogical integration as manifested in the Kazakh, Kyrgyz, and Bashkir epic traditions. Genealogical epics, transmitted orally from generation to generation, constitute a distinctive body of epic heritage that combines artistic and cognitive functions while serving as an important mechanism for preserving historical memory and conveying knowledge of ethnic origins and social organization. Developed in response to social demands and cultural needs, these narratives have contributed to the formation of the ethnic community's informational space, strengthened historical consciousness, and performed an integrative ethnocultural function. The study draws upon the theoretical approaches of leading scholars in Russian, Central Asian, and Turkological studies to examine the historical-typological characteristics, poetic structure, and functional features of genealogical epics among Turkic peoples. The article interprets the concept of epic cyclicity as the transmission of genealogical and historical information through successive generations within a unified epic system. In turn, genealogical cyclicity is defined as the systematic recurrence of genealogical narratives through stable structural patterns in epic discourse, thereby forming an integrated epic cycle. In the Kazakh epic tradition, this phenomenon is reflected in multi-generational epic cycles; in the Kyrgyz tradition, it is embodied in the continuity of the Manas–Semetey–Seytek trilogy; and in the Bashkir epic tradition, it is manifested in the organic integration of genealogical prologues with clan history and the epic narrative. The findings systematize the historical typology of genealogical epics among Turkic peoples and provide a scholarly substantiation of the universal role of genealogical integration in preserving historical memory and ensuring cultural continuity within the epic tradition.
