Abstract

This article examines the narrative function of the incest motif in literary fiction within the framework of the taboo phenomenon and social critique discourse. The main objective of the study is to interpret the incest motif not within ethical or biological boundaries, but as a symbolic category that carries significant semantic weight within the structure of literary texts. The research is based on the analysis of a number of works from both Kazakh and world literature, aiming to determine the position of the incest motif within the literary system. In particular, the study explores the role of this motif in representing transformations within the family institution, the weakening of social norms, and the implicit manifestations of power and dependency relations. Furthermore, the concept of taboo is considered a universal mechanism regulating cultural and social boundaries, and its violation is identified as a key factor generating conflict and tragic situations in literary narratives. The study employs psychoanalytic, cultural-anthropological, and literary-semiotic approaches to analyze the function of the incest motif in revealing internal contradictions, psychological distress, and social pressure within character psychology. The findings demonstrate that the incest motif in literature is not merely a device that provokes emotional impact or shock, but an important narrative mechanism that exposes moral and cultural crises within society. In conclusion, this motif becomes an effective form of social critique by representing the violation of established taboo-based boundaries.
