Abstract

This study examines the symbolic relationship between the tree motif and the concepts of life and death in painting from a historical perspective. As one of the most ancient symbols of human history, the tree encompasses a broad universe of meaning extending from mythologies and religions to folk culture and plastic arts. The study first discusses the etymological origins and universal nature of the concept of symbol, followed by a comparative analysis of the meanings carried by the tree symbol in Turkish and Chinese mythologies. The manifestations of the Tree of Life motif across different cultures, beliefs regarding the sanctity of trees, and depictions of trees in monotheistic and polytheistic religions are evaluated under separate headings. The focal point of the research is the reflections of the tree symbol in painting. In this context, the study analyzes how artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Caspar David Friedrich, Arnold Böcklin, Peter Brueghel, Marcel Duchamp, Paul Delvaux, Vincent van Gogh, and Piet Mondrian integrated the tree motif with themes of life and death in their works. The findings reveal that the tree functions as a universal means of expression for mortality, rebirth, and existence in both Eastern and Western art traditions
