Abstract

This study aims to re-evaluate the composition on the door jamb of the Eastern Church at the Alahan Monastery and the ambo stair side panel exhibited in the Konya Archaeological Museum through an iconographic method, thereby revealing the place of fish symbolism in Christian art through primary sources. The focal point of the research is the "big fish swallows the small fish" composition on the aforementioned door jamb and ambo stair side panel, which was suggested to bear a folkloric meaning like a proverb in a study published in 1965. Moral stories, frequently utilized in the transmission of animal imagery and in the Hexaemeron texts of the Church Fathers, provide an important ground for understanding the hidden layers of meaning behind the figures. In this study, while the scene of the big fish swallowing the small fish depicted in the aforementioned works is analyzed within the framework of Physiologus and Bestiary texts, other examples with fish figures depicting different themes in Early Byzantine art are also included in order to address the place of the subject in Christian iconography with a holistic approach. Thus, by discussing the main composition and alternative fish depictions on the ambo panel in accordance with their liturgical architectural context, the article proposes to establish a semantic bridge between written texts and liturgical stone artifacts
