Abstract
This study analyzes the strategy of transforming military power into a consolidated ground of political legitimacy through the architectural and iconographic programs implemented by the Hauteville dynasty in the 12th-century Kingdom of Sicily. In the multicultural geography of the Mediterranean, during the transition from mercenaries to royalty, the Norman rulers transformed the textual claims in chronicles into a permanent visual proclamation through monumental structures in order to base their authority on a divine source. Within the scope of the study, through the Palatine Chapel and Monreale Cathedral, it is examined how theological figures and eschatological themes were used as strategic tools to reinforce the political legitimacy of the Norman kings. The examined structures display the spatial synthesis of religious hierarchy and political sovereignty, representing the developmental stages of royal authority. The main argument of the study is that the iconography brought together by the Normans in the structures they built is not an accidental combination, but rather an original language of legitimacy that responds to the political needs of the Norman rulers. In this context, the instrumental role of theology in the construction of political legitimacy and the ways in which the Norman dynasty legitimized its rule through religious and symbolic imagery are discussed.
