Abstract

The vacuum of central authority that emerged across Europe following the dissolution of the Carolingian Empire paved the way for the intensification of Hungarian attacks on Medieval Europe during the first half of the 10th century. Focusing on the Hungarian incursions into Italy, this study examines the military and political activities of the Hungarians in the region, spanning from the Battle of Brenta in 899—their first major military operation—to the Battle of Lechfeld in 955, where they suffered a decisive defeat by Otto I, King of East Francia. The article treats the Hungarian raids not merely as external plundering expeditions, but as a process that interacted with the internal dynamics of the Italian political structure. Through an analysis of primary sources, it discusses how local power centers, particularly King Berengar I of Italy, employed Hungarian soldiers as mercenaries and allies to eliminate political rivals. Furthermore, the study addresses the fear and psychological impact inflicted by the Hungarians on the local populations of Medieval Europe in general, and Italy in particular.
