Abstract

The aim of this article is to examine the clothing of figures depicted in the Byzantine mosaics of Hagia Sophia, Vefa Church Mosque, and Chora Church from a semiotic perspective. In this context, the representations of garments in the mosaics have been analyzed in terms of the iconographic meanings conveyed by color, fabric, form, and ornamental elements, and their relationship to the social, political, and religious structures of the period has been investigated. Within the scope of the study, a comprehensive literature review was conducted, and field research was carried out in the areas where the relevant monuments are located during the sampling process. For this purpose, high-resolution photographs of 24 figures from a total of 10 mosaics in Hagia Sophia, Vefa, and Chora in Istanbul were obtained and examined. Visual data were further processed with the support of artificial intelligence tools to facilitate reconstruction and analysis. As a result, the visual and theoretical findings demonstrate that the mosaics of Istanbul should not be regarded merely as aesthetic surface decorations; rather, the clothing elements—through their length, drapery, and especially the chromatic codes of imperial purple and red—function as multilayered signs reflecting the political power, religious ideology, and social hierarchy of Byzantine society.
