Abstract
This study examines the visual representation of the narrative of Sayf al-Mulūk and Badīʿ al-Jamāl a tale also included in the corpus of The Thousand and One Nights, within the Mughal pictorial tradition, which emerged from the synthesis of Timurid, Safavid, and local Indian cultural elements. The primary focus of the study is the only known illustrated Mughal manuscript of Seyf ol-Molûk and Badî`ol-Jamâl, preserved in the Fondation Martin Bodmer Library in Switzerland under the shelf mark Cod. Bodmer 550 and dated to AH 1033 (1623-1624). Consisting of 56 folios and 32 miniatures, this manuscript occupies a unique position in art history, as it reflects the stylistic transition in which the naturalism characteristic of the reign of Jahangir merges with the technical refinement associated with the Shah Jahan period. In existing scholarship, the visual representations of The Thousand and One Nights have predominantly been discussed within the framework of nineteenth-century Qajar Iranian painting, while the distinctive interpretations found in Mughal painting have not yet been subjected to comprehensive iconographic analysis. Aiming to address this gap, the present article offers a systematic examination of the manuscript’s illustrations, focusing particularly on fantastical and mythological elements such as fairies (peris), nasnās, ifrits, and dragons. Within this scope, the morphological characteristics of these supernatural beings, their costumes, symbolic connotations, and their functions within pictorial compositions are analyzed in detail. Their stylistic relationships with Ottoman and Indian visual traditions are also evaluated through comparative analysis. The findings reveal how figures rooted in Arabic mythological traditions were reinterpreted by Mughal artists and transformed into a hybrid visual language shaped by the period’s distinctive realist aesthetic. The visual construction of the narrative is elucidated through an examination of fairy figures categorized into three distinct groups, feathered nasnās figures with animal heads, and various typologies of ifrit representations. In this respect, the study contributes original and scholarly insights both to research on Mughal miniature painting and to iconographic studies of the fantastical narratives of the Eastern world.
