Abstract
This study, which comparatively examines the approaches of the Grand Mufti and Grand Viziers to the construction of charitable foundations in Ottoman architecture between the 16th and 18th centuries, addresses the fundamental question of why and how the attitudes of the Grand Mufti, head of the scholarly class, and the Grand Vizier, head of the military class, differed regarding the construction of charitable works. Given that both offices held the highest positions in the state and possessed similar levels of wealth, the significant divergence in their interest in the construction of charitable foundations constitutes the main argument of the study. These differences are quantitatively demonstrated through the unique charitable foundations of the period, and qualitatively evaluated within the context of the concepts of confiscation and foundation.
