Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine in depth the academic procrastination behaviour experienced by faculty members during the manuscript writing process through a phenomenological approach. The study seeks to identify the stages at which procrastination emerges, its underlying causes, its individual and organizational effects, and the coping strategies employed by academics. Conducted using phenomenology, one of the qualitative research designs, the study involved semi-structured interviews with faculty members working at two public universities in the Western Black Sea Region of Türkiye, and the data obtained from 16 participants who met the criterion of data saturation were included in the analysis. The data were analysed through thematic content analysis. The findings revealed that academic procrastination exhibits a multilayered structure encompassing cognitive, emotional, and behavioural dimensions. Procrastination was found to be particularly concentrated at the initiation stage of the writing process and to be influenced by individual factors such as lack of motivation, perfectionism, and anxiety, as well as environmental factors including workload and organizational pressure. Furthermore, procrastination was determined to reduce academic performance while increasing stress and burnout. The study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that academic procrastination is not merely an individual problem, but also a multidimensional phenomenon associated with the organizational context. In addition, it emphasizes the need to develop coping strategies for academics and to strengthen institutional support mechanisms.
