Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic affected not only global health systems but also how individuals access and evaluate information. During this period of uncertainty, demand for accurate information increased, while social media platforms became key environments for rapid information sharing and user interaction. YouTube, in particular, stood out as an important platform for observing public discussions because of its video-based format and interactive comment features. This study analyzes user comments posted under expert discussion programs on the official YouTube accounts of major Turkish television news channels during the COVID-19 period. Rather than directly testing the two-step flow theory, the research aims to describe audience reactions and interpret these findings within the framework of this theory. Using content analysis, the most-commented COVID-19 videos from the five news channels with the highest subscriber counts were examined. A total of 1,301 comments were analyzed. The results indicate that 38.35% of the comments were classified as approval, 23.75% as disapproval, and 37.89% as non-codable. Within the approval category, praise was the most frequent sub-code, while disagreement and critical responses dominated the disapproval category. The high proportion of non-codable comments suggests that a significant portion of user interaction consists of fragmented or emotional expressions. Overall, the findings demonstrate that YouTube users actively engage with content rather than passively consuming expert opinions. This indicates that the two-step flow theory should be reconsidered within the context of digital media environments, where interaction patterns are more complex and multidirectional.

Bulgulara göre yorumların %38,35’i onaylayıcı, %23,75’i eleştirel ve %37,89’u kodlanamayan kategorisinde yer almaktadır.
