Abstract

This study examines the historical roots of gastrodiplomacy in ancient Mesopotamia. Usually linked in the literature to the public diplomacy practices of modern states through culinary culture, gastrodiplomacy is treated here within a historical framework. The study demonstrates, through a qualitative content analysis based on the existing literature, that food operates within ritual, political, and diplomatic contexts. On the ritual level, offerings were related to maintaining the bond between gods and humans and to sustaining cosmic order. On the political level, food practices played an important role in displaying royal authority and reproducing legitimacy. On the diplomatic level, banquets and receptions for envoys served to establish and maintain intercity relations and to express hierarchy. These three levels are understood as different expressions of a shared symbolic system. The study argues that food played a central role in representation, relationship building, and meaning making in early societies, and that gastrodiplomacy should not be limited to the modern era.
