Abstract

The secular-inclined nature of the novel genre, which entered Arabic and Turkish literature in the nineteenth century, led religious references to remain in the background in literary texts. However in the mid-twentieth century, writers such as Najīb al-Kīlānī and Hekimoğlu İsmail transformed this course with novels that placed Islamic values at the center. In this context, based on the question of how the concept of the Islamic novel that emerged in modern Arabic and Turkish literature is manifested in literary texts, Najīb al-Kīlānī’s Azrā Jakarta , one of the first examples of the Islamic novel in the modern sense in Arabic literature, and Hekimoğlu İsmail’s Minyeli Abdullah in Turkish literature were examined. It was observed how these two novels, written in different geographies, construct religion as a ground of resistance and salvation in the face of political oppression, ideological orientations and social corruption. The study first presents information about the lives and literary aspects of the authors, and then introduces the subjects of the two novels. After that, the novels are comparatively analyzed and evaluated through the document analysis method in line with the identified common themes. As a result, it was determined that the identified themes were treated in similar ways although through different fictional constructions. In both novels, the domination established by political power over the individual and society under the influence of ideologies is portrayed in a multilayered manner; it is also demonstrated that the gap between the regime and the people extends beyond economic inequality and reaches a dimension that destroys the structure of the individual, family and society. In both works, religion in general and the Islamic faith in particular, constitutes the main axis of resistance and salvation and is presented as a solution and a way out against oppressive regimes and the degeneration and collapse of society and individuals. As a result of the comparative reading, it has been observed that the destructive effects of revolutions and oppressive regimes on the individual, society and culture manifest themselves on a universal scale. In light of these evaluations, it has been concluded that both novels fulfill the mission of reforming and reconstructing society with a consciousness of guidance rather than aesthetic concerns, in accordance with the purpose for which Islamic literature emerged.
