Abstract

The study examines some of Mehmet Rauf Inan’s works, which he began writing in the 1950s or earlier, within the framework of the learning and teaching principles (activity, reality, level, interaction, internalisation and guidance) of the realistic mathematics education (RME) approach that emerged in the 1970s. Document analysis technique was used in the study. In data analysis, descriptive analysis technique was utilised as the learning and teaching principles of RME were predetermined. The data collection tools for the study are Mehmet Rauf Inan's book ‘From Child to Culture: Teaching in School According to the Child 1’ and the work he co-authored with Muvaffak Uyanık entitled ‘Mathematics Key: Primary School Arithmetic and Geometry Textbook: 5’. In this study, the correlations between the learning and teaching principles of RME in the works written by Rauf Inan were examined, leading to the following conclusions: A total of 23 correlations were identified between the two works.. In examining the examples, questions, or lesson plans included in these works, it has been determined that in the correlations made in terms of RME's learning and teaching principles, some lesson plans may be correlated with more than one principle. The reviews conducted revealed that RME can be most closely associated with the principle of reality (11) among the principles of learning and teaching. In addition, correlations were identified in the sections examined in the study with the principles of level (eight), activity (six), interaction (six), guidance (five) and internalisation (two). Furthermore, the interdisciplinary approach (three) emphasised in the RME approach and references to the affective dimension (one) were also observed in these correlations.
