Abstract
This study aims to determine the professional identity perceptions of assistant principals working in public schools in Türkiye. The perceptions of assistant principals on their professional identities were tried to be determined in the dimensions of “reasons for choosing school administration as a career, perception of knowledge and expertise, perception of professional role, perception of professional position, professional identification and professional satisfaction”. The study group of the research, which used a basic qualitative research design, consisted of 26 assistant principals working at preschool, primary, secondary and high school levels. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview form. Descriptive analysis and content analysis techniques were used to analyze the data. According to the results obtained, the internal and external reasons for assistant principals' preference for school administration are very close to each other. Assistant principals learned school administration largely by consulting with experienced people - in a master-apprentice relationship and by researching on the internet. The perceptions of the participants about their roles were collected under the themes of communicator, serving education and correspondence officer. Assistant principals had a largely positive perception of their professional position. Participants associated their position with being a bridge between stakeholders (teachers, students, parents) and the principal and problem solving. A great majority of the assistant principals stated that they identified with their position as assistant principals. Although assistant principals were generally positive about their professional satisfaction, there were also a considerable number of negative opinions. When these results are evaluated as a whole, it can be said that assistant principals generally have a positive perception of professional identity.
