Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the symbolic motifs of the Epic of Oghuz Khagan. Furthermore, it aims to reveal its contemporary aspects that speak to the present and future in a universal sense. As a method, we chose the version of the Epic of Oghuz Khagan constructed from its earliest derivative and adapted into modern Turkish. We conducted its analysis according to Joseph Campbell's "separation-initiation-return" formula, which is based on the journey/stage archetype. The Epic of Oghuz Khagan is the foundation of Turkish mythology. It is both the national and natural epic of the Turks. This epic is the epic narrative of the life process of Mete Han (Mao-Tun), the founder of the Great Hun Empire (Asian Hun State), a great Turkic Turan state, and the first ancestor of the Oghuz Turks, from his birth to his death. In a way, it is his biography. Oghuz Khagan is the name given in the epic to Mete Han, who ruled as a Turkish leader between 209-174 BC. This epic is two-layered. The visible text contains a fairytale-like mythological narrative. In the background, however, symbolic journeys are depicted. The visible text shows the stages of Oğuz Kağan's life from birth to death. These include his birth, childhood, youth, achievements to prove himself, marriage, children, wars, the division of his country among his children, and his will. In the background, there are values that reach from the individual to the universal. That is, there is the Turkish state philosophy and Turkish culture that are valid always and everywhere. There are also characteristics such as the Turks' desire to dominate the world. These are values that will be necessary for the Turkish nation, guiding and directing it; they are indirect messages. These values can be summarized as follows: The Turkish leader must overcome the natural and social obstacles that threaten the existence of the Turkish nation. The Turkish leader must eliminate elements that sow division and discrimination, and disrupt national unity and integrity, either through persuasion or war. The Turkish leader is responsible to his nation and to God. The Turkish leader must spread justice to the world. The Turkish leader must be courageous, consult with the learned and wise, and seek help from God. The Turkish nation must obey its leader and work for the unity and well-being of its people. The Epic of Oğuz Kağan contains the fundamental principles of Turkish state philosophy. The values and institutions it contains have had an impact on subsequent centuries, particularly in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. Therefore, this text is more than just an ordinary mythological epic; it is also one of our universal foundational texts that speaks to the present and the future.
