Abstract
The Kyrgyz people, a Turkic group of the Kipchak branch, possess a deeply rooted oral culture tradition and a rich folk literary heritage traceable to the earliest Turkic settlement areas. Within this tradition, oral performers known as aqyns occupy a privileged position, having produced numerous distinguished figures who skillfully reflected various periods of Kyrgyz history. Among the most significant of these figures is Toktogul Satylganov (1864–1933), a versatile aqyn who left a lasting mark on Kyrgyz oral and written culture during both the final years of Tsarist Russia and the early decades of the Soviet Union. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive examination of the democratic aqyn identity attributed to Toktogul Satylganov by researchers, analyzing it through the lens of his poetry, biography, and ideological stance. To this end, the study is structured around two principal themes: an evaluation of how Satylganov has been treated in Turkish academic literature, and an investigation of the formation of his democratic aqyn identity and its reflection in his poetry. A qualitative research design was employed, with Satylganov's poems and relevant secondary literature in Turkish and Kyrgyz examined through a descriptive and interpretive framework. In order to contextualize the aqyn's ideological poetics, the theoretical lineage of socialist realism — from Marx and Engels through Lenin to Gorky's 1934 declaration at the Soviet Writers' Congress — was also assessed from a historical perspective. The study's principal findings indicate that the democratic aqyn identity is not a phenomenon that emerged solely in the aftermath of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution; rather, it has historical roots extending back to the uprisings of 1898 and 1916 during the final years of Tsarist rule. Satylganov internalized this identity through direct experience of exile, imprisonment, and social oppression, and gave it a more explicit and public expression following the Bolshevik Revolution. In the ideological poems he composed from 1918 until his death, the central themes include a Lenin-centered discourse of praise, sincere devotion to the new Soviet order, and an intense critique of exploitative social classes. In this respect, Satylganov may be regarded as one of the earliest and most authentic representatives of socialist realism in Kyrgyz folklore, predating the formal institutionalization of the movement as official Soviet doctrine. The study also identifies and critically addresses a recurring tendency in Turkish scholarship to overlook or downplay the aqyn's ideological identity.
