Abstract

Drawing on the concept of organizational dissent, this study offers a novel analysis of the Motion of Four and its implications for opposition politics. The article rests on the arguments that the ultimate goals of the Four and their oppositional strategy must be evaluated in relation to one another; that the entirety of the opposition’s aims and strategies cannot be confined to the Motion itself; that the politics of the opposition can be understood within a processual framework; and that the analysis of this politics can be carried out by distinguishing the phases of this process. Furthermore, it argues that, when viewed from the perspective of organizational dissent, the richness of dissent processes inherent to the theme of organizational dissent can be observed within the movement of the Four itself. The study demonstrates that the subjective ultimate goal of the dissidents who submitted the Motion, as articulated in the Motion of Four, was essentially the realization of a pluralistic form of democratization. However, when evaluated in its entirety, it becomes apparent that the attainment of political power constituted the objective ultimate goal of the movement of the Four. It is argued that the subjective ultimate goal was conceived by the dissidents as a stepping stone toward achieving the objective ultimate goal, and that the Motion of Four, which rendered organizational dissent articulated and upward dissent, was employed within this framework. This finding is supported by the diagnosis that the Four envisioned a strategy spread across phases within a process encompassing both internal and external opposition perspectives in line with their objective ultimate goal, and by the detection that, following the exhaustion of latent, articulated, and displaced dissent instruments, the rejection of the Motion of Four and the subsequent stigmatization and retaliations compelled the dissidents, in pursuit of political power, to transition to a second phase on the plane of external opposition.
