Abstract
This study examines the relationship between rediscount interest rates and credit volume in the context of the 2018 Brunson Crisis and reveals the influence of the rediscount mechanism on the credit channel in Türkiye. While rediscount practices in the literature are mostly discussed within the framework of exchange rate policies and export financing, this study contributes to the existing literature by directly associating rediscount interest rates with credit volume. The analysis employs monthly data for the period 2012–2025 and applies the ARDL bounds testing approach. In the model, credit volume is defined as the dependent variable, whereas the deposit interest rate, the rediscount interest rate, and interaction variables representing the Brunson Crisis are included as independent variables. The long-run findings show that deposit interest rates have a negative and statistically significant effect on credit volume; a 1% increase in the deposit rate corresponds to an approximate 2.15% decline in credit volume. In contrast, rediscount interest rates affect credit volume positively and significantly, being associated with an approximate 2.88% increase. In the post-crisis period, the effect of the rediscount rate becomes negative, while the effect of the deposit rate turns positive and remains significant. In the short run, both interest-rate variables are found to have negative but statistically insignificant effects; however, the Newey–West correction demonstrates that the rediscount rate exerts a significantly negative short-run effect on credit volume. The error-correction coefficient of –0.40 indicates that short-run disequilibria are rapidly corrected and that the model converges to its long-run equilibrium within two to three periods.
